The Worst "No-Call" of All-Time

Photobucket

From ESPNs Jay Bilas:

Worst No Call: At the end of the UCLA-Texas A&M game, Donald Sloan drove the lane for a potential game winning shot. Sloan was fouled. There is no question about it. A foul should have been called by the officials, and the shooter should have been protected. UCLA's Josh Shipp clearly hit Sloan on the arm on the shot, and the officials either missed it or chose not to call it because it was a late-game situation. Either way, the no call was unacceptable. The contact on the play was not incidental. No reasonable official can look at that play and suggest otherwise.

I'm glad some of these analysts are taking the refs to task. This has been the worst officiated season of college basketball that I can remember.

Hopefully, this is the next ref up on Jay Bilas' hit list

You obviously forgot about Brett Hull's foot in the crease.

ok, the second worst

As an unbiased college basketball fan watching this game live (on tv), I thought it was a good no-call.

Way too much is being made of this, just my opinion though.

how Bush..

he grabbed his arm..it wasn't even close

It's incredibly easy for internet slappies to whine about poor officiating and missed calls.

When I watched the game, I didn't feel like anyone was wronged. The Texas A&M player went hard into three UCLA defenders and didn't get a call.

Was it a foul? Probably.
Were the officials rooting for UCLA? No.

I don't know if you've ever been an official, umpire, referee, sidejudge, etc. If you have, you will understand that the game comes at you awfully fast and you don't have 3 days to look at still photos to see if you are making a correct call.

Long story short, the guy made the call he thought was correct given the time, situation, and circumstances. It was not the "worst 'no-call' in history."

I agree with Bush on this one.

The kicker to the Brett Hull "foot in the crease" call was that the ref actually was allowed to go to the replay to verify his egregious no-call...and he did.

The Sabres got pucked.

Well, one thing I don't agree with Bush about...

Was it a foul? Yes, it was. This was a bad no-call.

But, the rest of what he said was on target, in my book.

I always wondered why the reasoning of, "well, watching it live, it didn't seem like there was a foul" was used an excuse..

It shouldn't justify an official, who is supposedly one of the best at his profession and who is getting paid a lot of money to miss an obvious call. There has to be a difference between an official at the HS/Rec level and college/pro level. They are the elite, the best of the bunch and they should officiate as such

If an official isn't able to make calls when the action is fast, then IMO, he has no business being an official.

Its as simple as that.

Here is my biggest beef with this whole thing:

I'm sure there were a few thousand unbiased viewers of this game that were crying foul as the play happened live Saturday night.

There were probably a few thousand others who thought it was probably a decent no-call considering the circumstances. The A&M player dribbled into three players in a desperation situation. Generally, if you are an offensive player initiating contact, you do NOT get the benefit of the doubt.

The biggest problem is that millions of people (most who have no idea what they are talking about) are all over this thing. It's ridiculous and someone needs to defend the other side of this story--I'm defending the other side.

Isaac, you've bashed referees all season long. One doesn't need to go far to find your excuses for MSU losing to Wisconsin and Penn State. The Villanova/Georgetown game was a little earlier; The list goes on. Isaac, you have permission to gripe, because you are consistently griping.

The fact of the matter is that too many people (unqualified at that) are turning this into a circus. Maybe if Texas A&M could have cut of Collison's dribble penetration in the final minute of the game, we aren't having this conversation.

Games are decided by players during the entire 40 minutes. One blown call does not deserve this much hubbub.

My original comment that sparked this banter was "way too much is being made of this, just my opinion though."

i agree with you bush....its a valid point...too much is being made about "the call" and not enough about A&M not making a single field goal for about 9 straight minutes...

Similarly, MSUs loss to Wisconsin and the blown officiating took the focus off two terrible turnovers late in the game...

This year in college basketball, I feel that officials made themselves the center of attention....Hightower needs no explanation and the Trent Johnson technical from our vantage point as fans looked a bit overboard....

Bush, as an unbiased fan watching the game, I was screaming at the TV for a foul. Generally if a player's arm is grabbed in the midst of him attempting to shoot, there is a foul called and you DO get the benefit of the doubt.

The TAMU player didn't just get tapped on the elbow while shooting a jump shot (which sometimes goes uncalled), he got mugged.

There are also several players who make their living by intiating contact and scoring points from the free throw line (Iverson comes to mind).

I agree WOI that the referees have been terrible as of late, and the worst part is that no one will remember that TAMU should have had a chance to tie or that Xavier shot 28 more free throws (33-5) than my own Georgia Bulldogs in the first round.
